REAL Issues

Hunger

When many people think of the faces of hunger, they think about people in third-world countries that could be in the midst of war. However, the reality is that hunger is right on our doorsteps…in our country, in our state, in our communities.
In Georgia, where REAL Nonprofit Inc. is based, 1,643,270 people are facing hunger, and 496,110 of those people are children (these statistics are reported by Feeding America).
Charitable programs are very much needed to bridge the meal gap for those facing hunger. Another way those facing hunger have been helped is through government assistance programs, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which provides temporary help for people going through hard times – providing supplemental money to buy food until they can get back on their feet.

Due to recent changes in federal legislation as a result of DOGE, SNAP is facing budget restrictions, which means that fewer people would qualify for food assistance.

Rising Grocery Bills

Additionally, grocery bills have significantly increased over the past five years, with prices rising by 23.6% from 2020 to 2024, exceeding the overall inflation rate of 21.2% during that period, according to the U.S. Economic Research Service. As a result, demand at food banks has significantly increased. For instance, Atlanta Community Food Bank reports a 60% rise in monthly meal demand over the past three years. Likewise, the North Fulton Community Charities Food Pantry (where Shaan has donated items gathered from the community the last 2 years) serves more than 125 households each day!

Hunger is a REAL issue in Georgia. Specifically in the areas surrounding metro Atlanta (a short driving distance from REAL Nonprofit Inc.), 820,000+ people are projected to be food insecure.

People facing hunger are desperate for food donations. Those struggling to make ends meet can significantly reduce their food expenses when they use food pantries. This frees up money to use toward housing, utilities, gas, and other bills.

Education

According to UNESCO, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of education exclusion. Around 182 million adults are illiterate and over 1/5 of the children between the ages of 6 and 11 are out of school, followed by 1/3 of the youth between the ages of about 12 and 14.
Books for Africa, a US-based 501(c)(3) organization with a major warehouse and shipping center in the metro Atlanta area believes that access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books for Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs.

Books for Africa is the largest shipper of donated text and library books to Africa, shipping to all countries in Africa, including those in Sub-Saharan Africa with the highest rates of education exclusion.

In the metro Atlanta area, we are blessed with many families, individuals, and organizations that purchase books. Some of the best school districts in the state of Georgia are located around metro Atlanta, and many teachers and students utilize a plethora of books each year that may no longer be needed once they have served their purpose. This is the perfect opportunity to gather books for the Georgia warehouse of Books for Africa, where they will be shipped to the African continent where there is a REAL issue due to lack of resources for education.
